Freediving is a captivating underwater sport that allows individuals to explore the depths of the ocean on a single breath. To embark on this exhilarating adventure, it's essential to equip yourself with the right gear. In this blog post, we'll provide an overview of the basic freediving equipment you'll need to get started. Whether you're a beginner or looking to expand your knowledge, this guide will set you on the right path. Remember, you can always contact us for more detailed information and ask for the available equipment in stock and our team of experienced instructors can provide you the most suitable set of gear for your level.
Freediving Mask
A good quality dive mask is a fundamental piece of freediving equipment. Human eyes are not designed to see underwater. Masks create an air pocket in front of our eyes, allowing us to see with clarity. When selecting a mask for freediving, it's important to consider factors such as fit, field of vision, easy to grab nose pocket, and low internal volume. A properly fitting mask with a low internal volume minimizes the amount of air needed for equalization and allows for easier equalization at greater depths. Mask also must be equalized on descent by exhaling through your nose to avoid facial barotrauma.
Snorkel
A snorkel allows you to breathe while floating face down on the water's surface. Choose a snorkel with hydrodynamic shape, good breathability and comfortable fit. Snorkel must be kept out of mouth during the freedive.
Fins
Freediving fins are designed to provide efficient propulsion through the water. While long bladed fins are commonly preferred in performance, short fins are also used in training. Foot pockets should snugly fit to the foot to avoid blisters. Fin blades are available as plastic, carbon fiber, and fiberglass. These materials affects the efficiency and cost of the fins. Plastic fins are cheaper and easier to maintain but heavier and less efficient than carbon or fiberglass fins. Carbon fiber fins provide the maximum comfort and performance, and they are available in a range of stiffnesses which contributes to the improvement of your finning technique. Fiberglass fins offer a similar comfort and performance while remaining more budget friendly.
Wetsuit
A wetsuit not only keeps you warm but also provides protection. Your wetsuit should fit snugly but allows for flexibility and freedom of movement. Consider the water temperature and thickness of the suit to ensure optimal comfort during your dives. It is important to choose a wetsuit that fits properly because If the suit is too loose, water will flush in and cool the body; if the wetsuit is too tight, especially around the neck and diaphragm, it will affect your relaxation, breathing, circulation and movement. Wetsuits are available as one or two pieces -jacket and pants; custom or standart sized and can be made from a variety of neoprene material depending on where and what for they will be used. We will explain neoprene types, their qualities and uses in another post.
Weight Systems: Belt & Lead Weights
While wetsuits provide protection from cold water temperatures or the heat of the sun, they bring another topic to consider: buoyancy. You will need a weight system to counterbalance the positive buoyancy of your body and the wetsuit. This system typically consists of a weight belt and lead weights for the beginners. Freediving weight belts are typically made of silicone and rubber which can stretch and providing comfort while breathing. While they are equally comfortable, silicone is the most durable material and highly resistant to visual damage in the long term. By using a weight system, we aim to be slightly positively buoyant at the surface which help us float comfortably on the surface without fear of sinking and also help us to easily descend when we want to freedive.
Dive Computer
A dive computer is a valuable tool for monitoring important diving parameters such as depth, dive time, and surface intervals. Multiple depth or dive time alarms, water temperature, a dive log, and GPS in certain more advanced models are available and easily transfer data to your laptop or phone via Bluetooth. Choose a computer that is specifically designed for freediving, as it will provide accurate data and safety features tailored to this sport.
Conclusion
Equipping yourself with the right freediving gear is crucial for a safe and enjoyable underwater experience. By investing in a high-quality dive mask, snorkel, fins, wetsuit, weight system, and dive computer, you'll be ready to explore the mesmerizing depths of the ocean. Remember to prioritize comfort, fit, and functionality when selecting your equipment. So gear up, take that deep breath, and immerse yourself in the extraordinary world of freediving!
